Guided Meditation for Insomnia: An Intro
Do you have insomnia and not sure what to do about it?
Have you tried listening to a free guided meditation for sleep and anxiety?
If you’re living in the UK then you don’t really have too many options as GPs have stopped prescribing medication to treat this condition. Sleeping aids have far too many side effects and can cause dependence so, whilst you can buy these from your local pharmacy, you take them at your peril.
What you can do, however, is adjust your sleeping habits like relaxing an hour before bedtime, making sure your room is cool, dark and quiet or even having a warm and soothing bath.
Personally, I rely heavily on guided meditation for insomnia when the condition hits me pretty bad.
And by that I mean, when I can’t sleep before 3 AM for weeks at a time.
Now I don’t know about you but I, unfortunately, can be pretty stubborn and even when I know what I should be doing, I don’t generally do it until and unless I really have to.
Take my insomnia for instance. I’ve been suffering from it for about 3 weeks now and it’s only today that I started digging up my guided meditation for insomnia toolkit again. Which is strange, considering how effective they all are.
I’m out like a light as soon as I start listening to them and I stay asleep so why I resist using them I have no clue.
Anyway, hopefully, you’re not like me and are far more sensible when it comes to helping yourself.
So, if you are suffering from insomnia and you want to really get it sorted, try a free guided meditation for sleep and anxiety from YouTube. Guided meditation videos have really helped me and, I think, will help you too.
How to use a guided meditation for insomnia
There are of course many ways to use the following videos.
What I find most effective is to set up a playlist so the videos play one after the other.
I didn’t do any impressive scientific tests (like measuring brain activity whilst I’m sleeping) but what I do know is that when I listen to these, I fall asleep faster, stay asleep better and have more energy when I wake up.
If you’re worried about your phone overheating on the bed or the pillows, then just put them down on the floor.
If it’s the electronic signals that worry you, then add the videos to your watch offline playlist or download the audio version so you can turn on the aeroplane mode on your phone whilst the phone is in your room. Alternatively, you can also use a Q-Link to help relieve the effects of electromagnetic and geopathic stress overnight.
Sleep Talk Down Guided Meditation
If your main problem with sleeping at night is the falling asleep part, then this is for you. It’s a one-hour-long video with background music that is subtle and not at all jarring. It doesn’t overpower the words and I personally find it incredibly relaxing.
You’ll be guided by Jason Stephenson of Sleep Meditation Music and his voice is soothing with a very slight accent that I personally find charming and relaxing.
If you’re like me, you’ll be asleep in mere minutes.
Guided Sleep Meditation for Insomnia
I usually alternate between this meditation and the previous one to start off the playlist (I get bored quite easily).
Guided Sleep Meditation for Insomnia is a 2-hour video narrated by Lina Grace, who is a Certified Practitioner NLP, Hypnosis, Time Line Therapy® and NLP Coach.
The video itself contains a relaxation metaphor and sleep story followed by rain. I find it very effective in helping me relax, switch off and finally drift off, which I find surprising as I have a tendency to fight off sleep. The more tired I am, the more I don’t want to sleep.
Have you ever felt that?
Anyway, maybe the reason why this is so effective is that its designed to first, relax you and get you off to sleep: the first half of the recording contains spoken word and music and introduces rain.
And then after about an hour, it eases you into deeper sleep by continuing on with only the rain sounds.
I don’t know about you but the sound of rain always makes me think of cozy nights in.
Sleep Hypnosis for Calming An Overactive Mind
If you find it hard to get to sleep because your mind just keeps churning thought after thought, you may have an overactive mind.
In this case, this particular video is for you.
For about an hour, you’ll be guided by Michael Sealey who is trained and certified in Hypnosis and Clinical Hypnotherapy with the I.C.H.P. in Australia and in NLP and Eriksonian Hypnosis with the British Hypnosis Institute.
This video is actually a guided hypnosis for sleep and he uses spoken suggestions for relaxation over a soothing background sleeping music.
You’ll learn how to let go of too much thinking and finally be able to relax deeply.
5 of the Best Guided Sleep Meditation For Insomnia
Brought to you once more by Jason Stephenson, this video combines 5 of the best sleep guided meditations from Sleep Meditation Music.
I personally love everything from them as I find the meditations soothing, relaxing and calming but uplifting at the same time.
This meditation for insomnia and anxiety is also very effective as they ease you into deeper sleep after calming your mind first.
Before you know it, you’ll have released the anxiety and stress that can be a major cause of insomnia.
Guided Meditation for Sleep Problems and Insomnia with Hypnosis
This is what I listen to when I really need to catch up on sleep – in other words when I’ve been surviving on too little sleep for far too long and feel ready to collapse with exhaustion.
This video is a lengthy 8 hours and unless you’re unlucky enough to be deliberately woken up by something, will see you through an entire night’s sleep.
Your guide in this video is John Moyer, a Certified Consulting Hypnotist with a neutral accent, making it very easy to follow his instructions. At least for the first few minutes, because I fall asleep soon after and stay asleep until well after the video ends.
Try this one if you’re looking for the big guns.
You won’t regret it.

This is pretty cool. I never thought about doing something like this to help me fall asleep. I would usually try to keep a proper sleep schedule, so I won’t nap during the day if I know I’ll have trouble sleeping at night. I am loving the Jason Stephenson’s video though and how meditative the music is. I think I might be too tempted to listen to every word Linda Grace might be saying, so I just might not fall asleep using that one. LOL.
Its good that GPs aren’t prescribing medication to treat simple cases of insomnia, since there are more natural ways to treat the condition. My thing is try all the natural ways before taking drugs that may have serious side effects. And these meditative videos just might do the trick for lots of folks.
I’ve tried not napping but I have a pre-schooler who is also fighting sleep (I hope he doesn’t have insomnia like me) and sometimes, the only thing that works is when I pretend to fall asleep…except, sometimes there is no pretension and I wake up 2 or 3 hours later to him gently nudging me and telling me it’s wake up time. lol
I’m glad you liked the videos though. They work so well for me and hopefully, can help a lot of people who’ve done what they could and haven’t succeeded yet. :-/
I really enjoy the post. My wife suffers from anxiety and she takes medicine for it but the side effect that she is dealing with is insomnia because it keeps her awake. She doesn’t fall asleep until maybe 2 or so in the morning while I am fast asleep. Thank you very much for this site. I’ll have to show this to her and hopefully, it can help her. Thanks again.
Thank you for your comment and so glad we can help.
Do let us know how she gets on with this and also, if she needs a non-medical supplement to her anxiety treatment, you might be interested in Brad Yates’ Tapping Therapy: https://liveablissfullife.com/2019/06/tapping-therapy-for-anxiety-brad-yates-on-youtube/.
This was quite an interesting article. I have insomnia and have never heard of guided meditation as an alternative. The videos are a plus. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea a few years ago and sleep with a CPap machine. It works well but is not perfect of course. I will look more into this. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome. I swear, insomnia can be torture sometimes – especially when you’re lying down beside your husband or even beside your child and both are sleeping like angels. It’s so frustrating sometimes.
These videos have really helped me so I hope, you’ll be able to use them too.
Good luck and enjoy!
