When I became a mom, I seemed to have lost what little interest I have in fashion so I just went with what I was comfortable wearing (usually something black).
It also doesn’t help that I’m somewhat of a minimalist anyway and subscribe to the concept of a personal mom uniform.
In a hurry?
That means that I’m often to be found in a black and white tank top ensemble and black trousers. The only thing that changes would be the footwear and the jacket (if I need one) I pair them with.
This comes with a few problems though.
First, sometimes it’s too warm for a jacket but too cold for my arms to be bare.
Second, I sometimes get bored with my uniform.
Third, I can sew but not very well and it’s not the best use of my time. So, how to add sleeves to a tank top without sewing?
Well, if you’re like me, you could invest in a couple of Wingz and learn how to style clothes you already have.
Luckily, a few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to try a Wingz UK product for free in return for writing an honest account of my experience with it.
This was actually the first time I’ve heard of the company. Although, I can’t remember the countless times I wished that something like it existed ever since I moved to Scotland.
The changeable weather and the fact that I rarely check weather reports often meant that I was either overdressed (winter coat in August, anyone?) or underdressed (tank top with no jacket when polar air is blowing because the hot sun and clear skies clearly made me delusional).
So, discovering Wingz actually came at the right time.
What are Wingz?
Simply put, Wingz is instant sleeves that you can add to any sleeveless top or dress.
You can get them in either white or black, in fitted or flared styles, in different materials and in three sleeve lengths – 1/2, 3/4 or full-length.
How to wear Wingz?
Because Wingz is not common, I recommend watching the short instructional video the company created:
The pros: Why I recommend Wingz
Now that we have the basics out of the way, let me talk about my experience with the product and why I recommend it.
Spot on sizing
I ordered a size 0 based on the size chart below and it was a perfect fit for me.
One of the reasons I’m wary of buying such things as clothes online is the fact that I can’t try the product on first, which means that I can’t see how it fits firsthand.
Sometimes, I’ll order something based on the sizing chart and the product will be off a couple of sizes. I then have to go through the hassle of returning and ordering another size.
I was so grateful that for this product, I didn’t have to go through all that palaver.
Fast delivery
I ordered the product on the 20th of September and it arrived about 2 or 3 days later. I found the fast delivery pretty impressive and also convenient especially since I tend to wait for the last minute before you order anything.
Versatile
There are many ways you can wear Wingz depending on the product you have.
I chose the more casual white full-length super-thin viscose stretch for this review because I wanted it to pair well with my uniform but if I had chosen something a bit lacy or the one made of chiffon, I could’ve created a dressier outfit by simply adding the sheer sleeves to cover arms that may get too cold.
Either way, you still end up looking put together.
Perfect for changeable weather
You know those days when the sun is beating down your head so it’s too warm to wear an additional layer over your top but the breeze is too cold for you to leave your shoulders bare?
Yeah, Wingz is absolutely perfect for those days (as you can see in the photos above).
You just choose a product depending on the temperature. If it’s on the warm side, you might opt for the 1/2 or 3/4 sleeves and then go for the full-length sleeves if it gets too cold.
End result?
Unbelievable comfort – not too warm or too cold.
Just plain perfect.
Blends well
Take a look at the photos above.
Unless someone has the eyes of an eagle or has the time (and really, the gumption) to stare at your shoulders and study your clothes’ stitches, they won’t realise that you’re wearing any sleeve inserts.
That’s good though, isn’t it?
You want the Wingz and the clothes you’re wearing on top of it to blend like a chameleon so that it’ll look like you’re wearing a completely new outfit.
The goal is to easily transform clothes you already have (especially if you’re not crafty), remember?
The cons: What could be improved
“There’s always room for improvement,” as an old teacher used to say and it’s true, even for Wingz, which I actually recommend.
I’ve listed two of my main concerns about the product below to help you make an informed choice before investing in your very own Wingz.
Durability
I washed my Wingz just one time and a small part of the stitches on my left shoulder had already started to unravel.
As you can see in the pic, it’s teeny tiny. Even the most basic of stitches can fix it.
That said, I really wish it were more durable than that.
I’m not entirely sure if I just received a defective product or if it’s a design flaw but I’ll update as soon as I hear from the company.
Side note: I did follow their washing instruction using a relatively new washing machine so it couldn’t have been an error on my part.
Adjustability
Okay, I’m not entirely sure how this could be accomplished but I really hope that someone with more creativity than me can create a solution to this wee issue.
As you can see in my pictures, I’m not particularly gifted in the boob category so I usually get away with walking about sans a bra.
I prefer not wearing any actually as I find a bra far too constricting.
However, when I first wore my Wingz, it kept riding up (presumably because there’s nothing much in the way of my err breasts to prevent it from doing so), which was not only uncomfortable but also ended up looking awful.
[Sorry, I won’t be putting any pics of that. :-D]
So anyway, I tried wearing a bra and it then stayed put.
Now, every time I wear my Wingz, I pair it with a nice bra.
I would, however, really prefer not to wear a bra so if anyone can provide a solution to that, I (along with other ladies who don’t like wearing bras either) would be very grateful. 🙂
To recap
If you’re looking for ways to cover your arms without adding an extra layer to your outfit, if you subscribe to a personal uniform but get bored and so, want to learn how to mix and match clothes you already have or if you’re not too happy with your arms and would prefer to have them covered, then I recommend investing in your very own Wingz product.
Versatile, flexible and comes in classic white and black, a Wingz sleeve insert will transform clothes you already have without requiring you to invest too much money (or too many layers).
If you want to get your own Wingz sleeve insert, head on over to their website, Wingz Fashion, and choose the one that best fits your style.
