Do you often feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the emotions of those around you? Do you often feel down and don’t know why?
As an empath, taking care of your own energy is so important.
After all, how can you help others if you don’t have enough energy for yourself?
That’s why I wrote this article on self-care for empaths: To help you learn how to protect yourself from negative energy.

Setting Boundaries For Yourself
If you’re an empath like myself, you’ve probably learned the hard way that self-care is essential for protecting our energy. If we don’t look after ourselves, we can get overwhelmed by the negativity around us, which ironically “leads to a temporary loss of empathy and compassion.”
One of the most important things you can do for self-care as an empath is to set and implement strong boundaries. We have a tendency to give too much without replenishing what we lose. Trust me, you don’t want that to happen.
You can’t keep giving your all without receiving anything in return. No, this isn’t a selfish quid pro quo. It’s simply that you can’t pour from an empty cup. And if you keep giving without topping up? You’ll soon have nothing left.
So, create a space between yourself and those who seek out your understanding and compassion – otherwise, you’ll become exhausted by their demands on you, and eventually, you’ll start to resent them.
How do you do that?
Say “yes” strategically. You don’t have to bend over backwards just to please people. You have a right to your own needs and wants. So, say “yes” only if you really want to. Decline if you don’t – and remember that “no” is a complete sentence.
Taking Time For Self-Reflection
Self-reflection is an important part of self-care for empaths. It involves:
- Developing awareness of your feelings, triggers, and boundaries
- Understanding how you interact with others so you can nurture your relationships
- Being honest about your wants and needs
- Listening deeply to yourself as well as others around you
- Taking time for introspection and contemplation
Engaging in these activities will help you connect more deeply with yourself and allow you to act based on this knowledge. For example, if you’re always angry after spending time with a friend, you’ll want to figure out why.
Is it because said friend is always negative and talks about problems – all the time? Do they tend to dispense backhanded compliments that leave you confused and unsettled? Are you starting to worry that they’re not really a friend and the uncertainty is taking its toll on you?
Taking the time to reflect on who you are and what you need and want will allow you to stay true to your values while also nourishing yourself emotionally and spiritually.
In this way, self-reflection leads you to greater peace and understanding – not only within yourself but also between yourself and those around you.
Practicing Mindfulness And Meditation
Another powerful strategy empaths can use is to sink deep within. Go beyond conscious self-reflection and engage the subconscious by practicing mindfulness and meditation.
These incredibly powerful tools allow you to become aware of the emotions swirling within you so that you can:

- Make conscious decisions about how to respond instead of just reacting out of habit or fear.

One of the best ways to protect yourself as an empath is by connecting with nature. Taking a walk in the park, going for a hike in the woods, or simply standing with your bare feet (or wearing grounding sandals) touching the earth are all great ways to connect with Mother Nature.
Seeking solitude among nature will provide peace from external noise and stressors that you may encounter on a daily basis. With no distractions, your senses become heightened, allowing you to better appreciate what surrounds you – the sound of birds chirping, sun beams through trees, and earthy smells emanating from nearby plants.
This connection grounds you back to the present moment and helps you tackle any challenges life throws at you without becoming overwhelmed – further enhancing self-care as an empath.
Establishing A Support Network
Ever felt that crushing sense of hopelessness in your chest when life pummels you with disappointment and betrayals or blindsides you with grief and loss?
In times such as these, our own inner strength sometimes isn’t enough to help us cope with the challenges that come with being an empath – so seeking out advice and guidance from people you trust is essential.
Speak with family, friends, or professionals like therapists and counselors. Choose those who can understand how overwhelming things can be for someone who takes empathy to a deeper level. Sometimes that can make all the difference.
Remember, you don’t have to do it alone. Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re weak. Instead, it shows that you’re in touch with yourself, can recognize your need for assistance and are actively pursuing resources to become more balanced and resilient against emotional overwhelm.
Create A Self-Care Routine As An Empath
Do you know what it’s like to feel drained after spending hours in a crowded room? As an empath, these moments of exhaustion are all too familiar.
But with the right practices and knowledge, we can protect our energy from other people and ensure that we have enough time for self-care. It may seem counterintuitive at times; however, by taking care of ourselves first, we become better equipped to help others – and that’s really what being an empath is all about.

- Minimizing your exposure to negative or draining people and environments. Surround yourself with supportive and positive individuals who uplift your energy instead.
- Building your emotional resilience by practicing mindfulness, journaling, or seeking guidance from a therapist or coach.
- Engaging in activities that help you raise your vibrational frequency, such as spending time in nature, focusing on gratitude, or listening to uplifting music.
- Regularly cleansing your energy through practices like smudging with sage, taking salt baths, or using crystals. You can also visualize a protective shield around yourself to keep unwanted energies at bay.
How Can I Ensure I Have Enough Time For Self-Care?
Incorporating self-care into your daily routine is crucial for maintaining your well-being and happiness. Here are some tips to ensure you have enough time for self-care:
- Treat self-care as an essential part of your day, and make a conscious decision to prioritize it.
- Dedicate specific time slots in your calendar for self-care activities, just as you would for any other important appointment.
- Start small. Transform activities you have to do anyway to self-care opportunities. For example, I use a walking desk so that I can practice physical self-care while I’m working. You could do the same or invest in a bike desk, a desk ball chair, or another desk exercise equipment.
- Learn to say “no” to requests and commitments that go against your values.
- Find activities you enjoy. This will make it easier to commit to them and maintain consistency.
- Look for ways to integrate self-care into your existing schedule. For instance, practice deep breathing during your commute, or take short breaks during work to stretch and refocus.
- Remember that self-care doesn’t always have to follow a strict schedule. Be open to adjusting your plans if needed, and be kind to yourself if you can’t always adhere to your self-care routine.
- Share your self-care goals with friends, family, or colleagues who can offer encouragement and hold you accountable. You may even find a self-care buddy to join you in your activities.
Remember that self-care is an ongoing practice, and it might take some time to find the right balance. Be patient with yourself and keep experimenting until you find what works best for you.

Do I Need To Connect With Nature To Protect My Energy?
Do you need to connect with nature in order to protect your energy?
Yes and no. Nature can be a wonderful way to ground yourself and help transmute negative energies, but it’s not the only way.
Many grounding techniques and forms of energy healing can be done without ever stepping foot outside (see the video I included in a previous section).
If connecting with nature is something that resonates with you, by all means, do so!
